And yet, there are only a few places, a dozen of pages where I felt cuts should could have been made. The prose was in general extremely rich and generous with the reader, with an appropriate and might I even say elegant vocabulary in relation to the theme. The subject is rare: the author decided to spend two years in a legal brothel in Germany, in order to write a first-hand account of prostitution. Balsy? Twisted? Weird? All of the above probably, but the result is a very interesting read. I did struggle with the book though. I struggled because I dont know of, or I havent read any other female-told stories about contemporary or even historic prostitution. Even the author gives the impression that there are not many other examples out there. So at first, I was almost expecting a thesis research on the subject. What are the many faces of prostitution, from the very bad to the mediocre and the very good? I wanted a large vision on the profession and my every question answered. And yet, this book, this novel, is not a thesis, or an objective or all encompassing view on the subject. This is a subjective novel, the more or less romanced experience of a upper middle-class girl who likes sex and looks for, I quote, ways to scare herself, a girl who no one obliges to go down the path of prostitution, a girl who can stop any moment it pleases her, who does not need it to pay her bills other than perhaps 600 euros spent at Agent Provocateur on one outfit. This French girl, who like all French is terrible at foreign languages, is in the privileged position to do it for the fun of it. And who is lucky enough to find a legal brothel where the business is built around the girls, and not around money. A girl with a job, in a probably rare, but pleasant and welcoming working environment. A rare type of prostitution and a rare setting for it as well. Is she a pleasant character? Not always..she reeks often of self-entitlement, better-than-thou attitude to the other girls because she is there for her book and not for the money..she is incredibly French, and unsurprisingly truly becomes friends only with the other French girl there..she has zero insight into other nationalities that do not have the luxury of options in life such as the Polish, Bulgarian or Romanian girls she dismisses quickly. Her investigation is not one of a curious anthropologist, but more that of a philosopher of what prostitution could be, but rarely is, if stigma was truly set aside. But a novel is a novel, not a research project and certainly not an état de lart on a given subject. I feel richer for reading it and I must say that for the vast majority of time it was time well spent.
